My backyard. As Locally Grown as it Gets!

I’ve been salivating over the idea of creating my own vegetable garden for years but I never took the plunge because I don’t really have a green thumb. That’s really an understatement as I seem to have killed every plant I’ve brought into my house for the past 4 years. It’s funny though, I seem to find a reason for my failed attempts to become a horticulturist each time all at no fault of mine of course.

There was that time I tried to raise my first tomato plant. It died because the sun wouldn’t shine enough in my apartment. Then there was that time I tried to nurture a beautiful bouquet of African violets. They all died because they wouldn’t absorb water fast enough. And finally there was my mini herbal garden. All of which bit the dust because basil kills thyme, thyme kills dill and dill kills mint. At least that’s what I told myself. :o)

But I am proud to say my past failed attempts at going Uber Locally Grown seem to have succeeded this time! About 4 weeks ago I bought a few lettuce and kale plants and planted them in a potting garden on my front porch. Aside from the bunnies that love to nibble on my greenery from time-to-time I am happy to say my greens are growing! I harvested my first bunch of lettuce last night and made a succulent tossed salad with vegan curry tofu….hmmm my favorite. So if you’ve never been able to keep a twig alive in the past I’m here to tell you it is still possible to have a healthy, wealthy lush green garden.

So go ahead, don’t be scared. Go uber locally grown and take it to your backyard!
