To scoot or not to scoot. That is the question.

Transportation costs shouldn't account for more than 10-15% of your monthly income but in recent years the cost of driving to work has nearly doubled. Rising gasoline prices, insurance premiums and maintenance fees in recent years have made owning or leasing an automotive a costly responsibility. As a result, more people than ever are contemplating the advantages and disadvantages of scooters as a means of transportation around town. That’s right, they are taking it to the street Vespa style.
Scooters offer numerous financial incentives such as 75 mph as well as lower insurance premiums and maintenance fees than small sedans. Seventy percent of American families own 2 or more cars which cost an average of $650/month each to own and maintain. A scooter on the other hand used as a second form of transportation will cost an average $150/month saving you more than $6,000 a year. In addition, scooters produce less atmospheric pollution than small sedans thus producing less carbon omissions. I can think of a lot of things I could do with an extra $6,000 in my wallet. How about you?
There are disadvantages to commuting via scooter such as no AC on a hot day summer other than nature’s breeze and the dreaded helmet head. I believe the environmental, fiscal and personal benefits of scootering to work far outweigh the shortfalls. Becoming a scooter commuter will undoubtedly lift your cool factor but it may also inspire your family, friends and coworkers to live a little lighter.
