Learn how to control unhealthy cravings

We all have cravings we know we shouldn’t give into but learning how to navigate through our unhealthy desires is a talent of its own. We crave chocolate, skipping workouts, fancy drinks filled with sugar and many other food and lifestyle weaknesses. In moderation, these weaknesses mean little but in large doses they can be physically, psychologically and emotionally harmful.

Take control first by bringing your desires into your full conscious awareness. Pay close attention to the emotional qualities you associate with the unhealthy cravings. Do they make you feel happy, excited, sad, guilty or do they just leave you wanting more? When you identify the emotional driving force behind your cravings you’ll be better prepared to control them. Ask yourself the following questions:

How does this desire fit in with my greater priorities?
Will following this impulse hurt me in the long term?
What will I be giving up if I follow this desire?

Articulating your true intentions will help you identify what’s most important. The difference between that extra serving of carbs doesn’t seem so important when your greater priority is fitting into your favorite jeans.
